George Stevenson

About the artists:

George Stevenson, born 1945 in the Hudson Valley, NY and long-time resident of Cold Spring. Stevenson, a Vietnam Veteran, was shot in the shoulder and took shrapnel in the knee and came down with malaria during fighting. He was awarded the Purple Heart. After recovering, he returned to combat and made it through the war, flying more than 25 aerial assault missions. In 1970, he suffered a stroke that paralyzed his right arm and left with a limp, as well as limited speech. He turned to art. George, once right handed, but after the stroke took up painting to improve the use and control of his left hand. He obtained a scholarship to the Art Students League for a four year program. His colorful and restful paintings all are done with his left hand. He has had many numerous exhibitions over his career.

George's style is of a natural primitive with outstanding color and energy as you can see by this series.
