About the Arist:

Ellen Hayden: has a BFA in painting from the State University of NY at New Paltz. She has been seriously involved in painting and art for the last 35 years. She is looking to achieve a universal theme by use of the cats as a symbol, by color, and by shape in 20th century terms.

About the Series, "Mermaids and the sea

The mermaid series of paintings by Ellen Hayden evolved over a period of time, from a young age the mythological creature, the mermaid has always intrigued her.  Starting during recent trips to the West and to Puerto Rico where she saw a few mermaid sightings.

Ellen says, "It had always been my desire to use the mermaid as a motif in a series of paintings. Through action, determination and passion this show has now come together. By the use of color and with my outsider approach the mermaid painting speaks louder than any words.

"After many trips and time spent on the beautiful beaches of Vieques, Puerto Rico and the West Indies, I often envisioned the exotic and mythical creatures everywhere I went. As an outsider artist, I wasn’t as inspired to paint just pretty mermaids but strove to capture their souls in my paintings."
